Make sure the stick is anchored to the bottom of the creek or lake and sticks out of the water by 2 to 8 inches. Drip food lure onto the stick. If you’re in a channel on open water, place some food on a stick at the end of the channel on the bank so it can drip into the water, aiding in beaver dam removal and overall beaver removal efforts. Remember, if river otter removal is also a concern, consider their presence in your setup.

(3) Removal or breaching a beaver dam for purposes of effective beaver control:
(a) Beaver dam removal or modification may occur without compensatory mitigation only when:
(i) The continued existence of the beaver dam poses an imminent threat to the integrity of water crossing structures, other structures or improvements of value, private and public land, or in rare instances, the environment; and
(ii) The beaver dam has been in existence for less than one year. Beaver removal may be assessed on a site-specific basis for older dams.
(b) The department will determine whether compensatory mitigation is necessary to offset habitat loss caused by beaver dam removal or breaching for any dam older than one year.
(c) The department may permit the use of explosives for beaver dam removal if it concludes that this method has fewer environmental impacts compared to other alternatives.
(d) Beaver trapping and dam management activities must occur when they will have the least impact on fish life. Except in cases of emergencies or imminent danger, all work must take place when spawning or incubating fish are least likely to be present.
(e) Whenever possible, remove or notch beaver dams by hand or with hand-held tools, as well as hand-operated or motorized winches to minimize disturbance. This consideration is vital as it may also aid in the management of river otter removal in the vicinity.
